Cancún, whose name is in Mayan and means "nest of snakes", is located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, in the southeast area of Mexico, along the Caribbean Sea. Since its foundation in 1974, Cancún has become one of the most important destinations, both in Mexico and worldwide. Its turquoise beaches are considered by many as among the most beautiful on the planet.

Its tourist activity is concentrated in Cancun’s hotel zone, 25 kilometers (15.5 mi) long, flanked by the Mexican Caribbean beaches and the mangroves of the Nichupté Lagoon. Its beaches, which include Las Perlas and Delfines (with Blue Flag certification), feature renowned resorts and all-inclusive hotels, first-class shopping centers such as La Isla or Luxury Avenue, sophisticated and casual restaurants, as well as vibrant nightclubs and bars. In the hotel zone you can find Wet'n Wild and a wide range of adventure tours, such as rides on speed boats, swimming with dolphins, or flyboards to fly over the waters of Cancún.

Downtown is the area where local residents of Cancún usually meet, but is also visited by tourists and foreigners who wish to see the local lifestyle. This area has craft markets such as Mercado 28, shopping centers with movie theaters such as Malecón Américas and La Gran Plaza, venues which have entertainment options with artists from the world music scene, such as Plaza de Toros, and of course Andrés Quintana Roo Stadium, home of Atlante, the official soccer team of Cancún.

Cancún has been named the gateway to the Mayan World as it is an excellent starting point to visit places like Tulum, Chichén Itzá, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, and Cozumel.
