Leon is located in the Mexican state of Guanajuato in the Bajio region, 1,800 meters (590 ft) above the sea, 386 kilometers (232 ft) from Mexico City, and 56 kilometers (34 ft) from the city of Guanajuato, a beautiful tourist destination with many tours available. Leon is a colonial city known as the Pearl of the Bajio and is famous worldwide due to its production of footwear and leather goods. Another landmark of the city is the Triumphal Arch of Avenue of the Heroes, a representative monument of Leon. This destination is ideal for business and leisure, since it offers attractions and lodging options for all budgets.

The city of León is home to many historic buildings with remarkable architecture. Places you can visit include Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Light, a neoclassical-style church in the historic center of the city, which has a quarry and two towers over 65 meters (213 ft) tall. Inside you can admire a marble altar and stained glass windows made in Germany.

Another building you should visit is Expiatory Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This neo-Gothic church was begun in 1921 and it was not completed until 2012. Its interior is colored by the light passing through its stained glass windows. At the bottom of the temple there are crypts that can be visited by the public. Another representative detail of this building is its bronze doors with religious motifs.

León houses the Guanajuato Cultural Forum, a complex spanning about 9 hectares (22 acres) dedicated to entertainment, culture, and artistic training. Among the buildings that comprise this complex include the Museum of Art and History of GuanajuatoBicentennial Theatre, considered the best opera house in Latin America; and Calzada de las Artes, an area with gardens and fountains, where art exhibitions take place. This city is also home to Poliforum Leon, one of the largest convention centers in Latin America.

La Perla del Bajio houses the International Balloon Festival that is held at the Metropolitan Park of León in November every year. Another important event that takes place in the city is Feria Estatal de León during January, where you can find craft and trade shows, as well as rides. The Corona Rally Mexico in March and the MX1 Motocross World Championship in September also take place in this city.

Families traveling to León will visit Explora Science Center, which includes interactive theme rooms, an IMAX® theater, workshops, and other facilities. Leon Zoological Park is home of 2,000 animals of more than 200 species, including eight unique species in Mexico under the concept of semi-freedom. Sports lovers cannot miss to visit Nou Camp stadium, home of the Club Leon professional soccer team, featuring a museum and tours of its newsroom and trophy room.
