Bogotá is located in a high plateau in the Andes, 2,640 meters (8,661 ft) above sea level, and it was the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. The city has a very rich history, housing some of the main scientific and cultural institutions of the Spanish colonial period, including the first astronomical observatory in the Americas. Bogotá is the main financial center of Colombia, where some of the main industries are set. There is also an increasing number of shopping centers, especially in the famous Zona Rosa, an area where some of the most exclusive shops are set. Mercado de Pulgas (the flea market) can be found in downtown Bogotá; it is a very famous place full of handicrafts, antiques, and art works made by Colombian artisans. In recent years, Bogotá has become the most popular destination of Colombia, given that it offers attractions including Jardín Botánico José Celestino Mutis, Quinta de Bolívar, which was once home of Simón Bolívar; Planetario de Bogotá, and Maloka, a science and technology theme park. The historic center of La Candelaria is one of the city icons, a picturesque place which houses some theaters, as La Candelaria, Colón, Seki Sano, and Centro Cultural García Márquez; there are also several museums such as Casa de la Moneda or Museo Militar, in addition to Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango, one of the most visited libraries in Latin America. Another popular landmark is Museo Botero, with art works by Renoir, Dalí, and Picasso, among others, plus more than 100 pieces by Fernando Botero, one of the most famous art representatives of Colombia. You can also find Cerro de Monserrate, where you can visit Santuario del Señor Caído, situated on the top of the mountain, by taking a cable car ride. There are places around the city that should not be missed, as Parque Jaime Duque, housing a zoo and replicas of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, including the Taj Mahal. The natural parks Chingaza and Sumapaz are ideal for camping. ***The official currency of Colombia is the Colombian Peso (COP).
