About Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, Mexico

Ciudad del Carmen is located between the Gulf of Mexico and Términos Lagoon. The city is a major hub for Petróleos Mexicanos, which holds the most important area of hydrocarbon exploitation of Mexico in the Bay of Campeche; for this reason, the destination offers many business hotels.

This thriving city is located on an island connected to the mainland by two bridges, being the most important of them El Zacatal bridge, the country's longest with almost 4 kilometers (2,5 mi) long. This marvel of modern engineering offers a light show every night.

El Zacatal bridge over the waters of Términos Lagoon was named so because the Spanish conquerors thought that it was the end of the big island of the Yucatan. This lagoon has mangroves and beaches that have become a sanctuary for birds, crocodiles, dolphins, manatees, and hawksbill sea turtles. You can tour it by boat and contemplate it in all its glory.

Due to its age, Ciudad del Carmen has several historic attractions. The most representative are the Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, dating back to the 18th century; and Victoriano Nieves Céspedes Museum, where you can learn about the history of the city. You can also visit barrio del Guanal, the oldest neighborhood of the island, where you can appreciate the original architecture by the first settlers of Ciudad del Carmen.

In the historic center you will find sites of great cultural significance as the City Hall, Juárez Park, and the beautiful Ignacio Zaragoza Park. As you walk through downtown Ciudad del Carmen, you can buy some typical local handicrafts such as hammocks and pottery. Travel to the coastal area of Ciudad del Carmen and enjoy beautiful beaches, like Playa Norte, a beach with spacious and beautiful fine sandy shores. Remember to take a walk along the city boardwalk and admire the sunset.

If you want to know more about the flora and fauna of the island, Ciudad del Carmen Zoo is near Playa Norte, where you will admire various animal species and enjoy extensive green areas. In addition, the zoo offers horseback rides.

There are two important festivities in Ciudad del Carmen. The first one is Feria Carmen, a fair from July 15 to 31 in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The main event during this celebration is a pilgrimage with the image of the Virgin. The second festivity is Carnival de Ciudad del Carmen, a party full of colors that takes place every year between the months of February and March.
